medical consultation

Medical consultations

Howick Health & Medical Centre's doctors have a broad range of expertise.

Along with the usual general medical and accident consultations, we have doctors with specific interests in women’s health, children’s health, men’s health, and corporate health. We welcome the presence of a support person in your consultations.

Our consultation time is normally 15 minutes, however, if you intend to bring up more than one issue, we would advise booking a longer period, i.e. 30 minutes for a smear and breast check, or a repeat of your prescription, plus another medical issue you would like to discuss.

Prescriptions

You will generally need to see a doctor if you have not been seen recently for a repeat prescription to ensure your clinical safety.

The doctor has a medico-legal responsibility to ensure that appropriate prescribing and the necessary investigations are current to help in the monitoring of the safety of your medications, as well as ensuring age appropriate screening is discussed.

Our practice policy is for you to call the nurse and to allow 24 hours for a script to be available. Prescriptions can be faxed or mailed, though this will incur an additional charge.  Click here for online scripts.

Surgery

We perform cost effective surgery on a regular basis, taking care of skin cancers, ingrown toenails, skin tags, moles, sebaceous glands, and lipomas. A consultation prior to surgery is required to provide informed consent.

Travel health

Our nurses and doctors can give you advice, prescribe medications, and administer vaccinations prior to your overseas travel

It Is advisable you book an appointment with the doctor at least six weeks prior to your trip.

Please advise reception if you would like to have a travel consultation as this generally takes at least 15 minutes and cannot be combined with a general consultation.

It would be helpful that you fax your itinerary of your travel plans prior to your visit. We do not administer the yellow fever vaccine.

Prior to your doctor's visit, click here for more information.

Nurse services

Our friendly, experienced nurses help provide you with personal health care.

Some services and tests available include:  childhood vaccinations (click here for more information), liquid nitrogen (normally preceded by a doctor’s examination at a separate consultation), cervical smears, and blood test discussions if required.

Please call in the afternoon for your results, as this is a more convenient time of day for the nurse.
